Family in need of help after fire destroys their home

TATTNALL CO, GA (WTOC) - A Tattnall County man had no other option but to throw his children out their bedroom windows in order to save their lives. Their home was engulfed in flames.

It happened off Cleive Watson Road in Tattnall County near Glennville early Monday morning.

"When I woke up I just went screaming and hollering, trying to get the kids out of the house, and they wouldn't wake up," said Direen Jinks, the children's father.

Jinks says his wife April, had already climbed out a window with their 3-month-old son, but their five other children were still inside. The smoke was getting thicker. 6-old-Dibrea was one of the children still inside. "My daddy came and kicked the window out, and my daddy almost threw me on that car," said Dibrea.

There was no time. Jinks just started throwing children out the window, something they find humor in now. "I was buck naked," laughed Jinks.

They have to laugh in order to keep from crying. Everything they own is gone, nothing can be salvaged. All April Jinks could do was look at the mess. "It's scary, it's stressful, I am still in a state of shock," said April Jinks.

Right now they don't have food, diapers, clothes, book bags, school supplies for the kids, and they need help. "Hopefully somebody out there can reach out and help us and everything because we really need help right now," said Direen Jinks.  Help that can't come fast enough.

If you would like to help, an account has been set up in the family's name at South Georgia Bank in Glennville.

The family is also in need of clothes. Those donations can be taken to 1205 Highway 23 in Glennville or to New Church and Prayer in Glennville.

The children range in ages from 3-months-old to 9-years-old.  Their sizes are listed below:

  • 9-year-old Chardonnay Jinks: Size 10/12, a medium or large in shirts, and size 2 in shoes.
  • 6-year-old Ksanija Barrett: Size 6 slim, a small shirt, and a size 11 ½ in shoes.
  • 6-year-old Dibrea Jinks: Size 6 regular, a small shirt, and a size 11 ½ in shoes.
  • 4-year-old Direen Jinks Jr.: Size 5, a small shirt, and a size 11 ½ in shoes.
