Drug task force seizes 3,300 grams of cocaine

BEAUFORT CO., SC (WTOC) – A Hilton Head Island woman has been arrested on drug charges and driving offenses.

The Beaufort/Jasper Multi Agency Drug Task Force on Oct. 21 arrested Alejandro Alvear-Leyva, 34, on two counts of trafficking cocaine and driving under suspension.

The drug task force and the Federal Bureau of Investigation wrapped up a portion of an ongoing drug investigation. The drug task force said Alvear-Leyva was responsible for supplying the Hilton Head Island and Bluffton area with large amounts of illegal drugs. During the investigation, Alvear-Leyva was identified as bringing multi-kilograms of cocaine into Beaufort County, according to authorities.

The drug task force conducted a traffic stop on a 1995 Ford Windstar van that Alvear-Leyva was driving on U.S. 278 near Hwy 170 in Bluffton. Authorities said Alvear-Leyva was driving the vehicle without a driver's license. A Beaufort County Sheriff's Office canine detected drugs in the van and resulted in a search that turned up three and one-third kilograms of cocaine, according to authorities.

An estimated 30 grams of cocaine and packaging for illegal drugs were found in a search of Alvear-Leyva's residence and a storage unit.

Alvear-Leyva was arrested and transported to the Beaufort County Detention Center.

The investigation is ongoing.
