Emergency exercise under way

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) – A full scale emergency exercise is being conducted that involves several agencies.

The drill runs until 1 p.m. in the Garden City area.

According to the Savannah-Chatham County Public Schools Communication Office, a training exercise of this scale has never been conducted in the Savannah-Chatham Area.

Police, fire and EMS from all over the county have been invited to participate along with state and federal responders.

This is the first time the Chatham County Local Emergency Planning Committee has conducted such an event with as many agencies.

The goal is to test the readiness and react of the area's first responders by creating a scenario that will provide true to life emergency situations over a wide geographical range, according to SCCPS.

Additionally, the scope will create a test for communication between agencies and coordinated response efforts. Citizens must be aware that this is only a training exercise for evaluation purposes and not a real emergency, according to SCCPS.
