Firefighters win eat off for charity

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - When it comes to eating massive quantities of burger and bread, leave it to the professionals, as in police officers and firefighters.

B&D Burgers threw down the challenge to eat their famous three pound, three layer, Angus beef burger and buns the fastest.  The winner would take home $1,000 for charity in the Guns and Hoses Challenge.

Savannah Chatham Metro Police were eating for the United Way and Savannah Fire chose to chew for the Georgia Burn Foundation. The two teams of five had to have two finish an entire burger the fastest.

And while one member of the Metro Police team did finish his burger first, it was Savannah Fire that finished two burgers the fastest.

Master Firefighter Mike Ward scarfed his burger down first on his team. "They [SCMPD] finished pretty quick, their first guy, then I ended up finishin'.  Then one of our other guys came in and did it, but it was no easy feat by any means." Ward continued, "It was pretty ugly for a while; I started seein' double and that made it worse"

B&D presented the oversized check to Savannah Fire at the Forsyth Band Shell after the eating was finished. The restaurant says only one in six people who order the three-pounder ever finish it.
