Chicago Porch Collapse

(Chicago-AP) -- Chicago officials say they haven't found a construction permit for the porch that collapsed yesterday, killing 12 people and injuring almost 60. But they say a structural engineer's preliminary examination has determined the porch was sound.

Most of those on the porch were in their early 20s. They were attending a party in an apartment in Chicago's affluent Lincoln Park neighborhood when disaster struck.

City officials say as many as 50 people may have been crowded onto the third-floor porch, and there may have been dancing and beer kegs as well. They're warning people not to overload their porches this summer, especially with the Fourth of July holiday coming up.
