Hilton Head Island loses drinking water well

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, SC (WTOC) - Hilton Head Island has lost another drinking water well because of salt water leeching into the ground.

Salt water has been entering the freshwater upper Floridan below the island for a decade. Officials say the problem is caused by over-pumping the aquifer in Savannah, lowering the water level and allowing the salt water to enter.

The well will now only be used for firefighting and other emergencies.

The Hilton Head Island Public Service District has now lost six wells and expects to its other five within 10 years.
