DATAW ISLAND, SC (WTOC) - It was a patriotic day Dataw Island's golf course as the local Military Order of the Purple Heart Chapter and the Lions Club of Beaufort teamed up with residents of Dataw to hold their annual golf tournament to support the Wounded Warrior Project.

Before hitting the course, members of the Purple Heart posted the colors and held a special ceremony on the course. Many of the participants at the event are Veterans and fully support the worthy cause.

"We have a big response," said Susan Blackburn, organizer. "Its probably the biggest tournament that Dataw Island does throughout the year. It's just incredible how its grown and this year we have close to 200 golfers.

In addition to all of the golfers, organizers say plenty of people have donated their time and opened their wallets to make this event a success.

While this year's totals have not been calculated, over the past three years, they've raised over $40,000 in support of the Wounded Warrior Project.
