SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - Six months ago, the City of Savannah demolished Strathmore estates and on Wednesday broke ground for the new Savannah Gardens.
Leaders from the city gathered at 10:00 p.m. to celebrate the beginning of the $100 million development that features approximately 600 affordable homes. The city's goal is to create mixed income community that is also environmentally friendly.
"This entire neighborhood will be transformed from a crime infested and roach infested neighborhood to a significantly clean neighborhood that's crime free, roach free, and something the residents will be proud of," said Savannah Alderman Larry Stuber.
Workers believe that over 100 units of the new community will be completed within next year.
City leaders will also put to use some of their green ideas they gathered during their visit to sweden last fall.
