SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - WTOC is teaming with the American Red Cross to host a phone-a-thon November 22 to help raise money for an organization that helps many people in their darkest hour.
In this region, Red Cross staffs and volunteers deal with higher number of disaster calls over the fall and winter months. House fires account for a large number of disasters during which the American Red Cross offers assistance to victims.
Hundreds of house fires, one after another take a toll on the organization's disaster funding. But each victim family has a story. Chris and Catherine Collins lost their home to a kitchen fire Sunday, November 24. While Catherine was cooking on the stove, their toddler fell and the fire started as she tended to the child. They and their three children got out safely, but everything that was inside the home was destroyed.
"Within the hour that the fire trucks left, the Red Cross was there and they made sure we had shelter, food, clothing," Chris said Monday. "We couldn't ask for more than that."
Join WTOC and Red Cross staffers and volunteers Monday, November 22 throughout newscasts starting with THE News Now at 4pm to help local chapters of the American Red Cross.
