SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - County Commission Chairman Pete Liakakis read George Washington's 1789 Thanksgiving Proclamation at noon Tuesday in Johnson Square.
Liakakis hopes the citizens of Chatham County will reflect on everything the community has to be thankful for. He cited construction projects that have added local jobs, including Truman Parkway Phase V, the new Skidaway Island Bridge and the expansion of the Chatham County Detention Center.
"We have many blessings in our community and I think it's important that we appreciate those blessings that we have and that we give thanks for the blessings that we have," he told WTOC.
George Washington's 1789 Thanksgiving Proclamation Speech officially determined what is known now as Thanksgiving Day.
