HILTON HEAD ISLAND, SC (WTOC) - Hilton Head Island will soon have a new mayor after 15 years. After a long campaign and a run off election, Town Councilman Drew Laughlin has been elected the town's next mayor.

Laughlin captured a little more than 51 percent of the vote in the runoff election on Tuesday against architect Tom Crews.

Long time Mayor Tom Peeples endorsed Laughlin for the position. Laughlin says he is ready for the challenge, but also says there is a lot to do.

"Trying to do what we can to secure the future of the Heritage Golf Tournament. We don't have a whole lot of time it seems to work on that. That's one of the things we'll be thinking about right away," said Mayor-Elect Drew Laughlin.

He also told WTOC that his other big priority is economic development and help to revitalize older properties on the island. He will take office on December 7.
