A new low-cost airline is now taking flight at the Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport.
On Thursday, Allegiant Air's first flight from Savannah to Fort Lauderdale took off. The airline is only offering two flights a week, everyone is hoping this is the start of something big.
Steve Fenton is excited to be one of the first people on the first Allegiant air flight from savannah to Fort Lauderdale.
"I have a friend I haven't seen in 28 years was going down there and saw they have this special on the Internet for $65 and couldn't beat that," said Fenton.
Steve said it's cheaper than a tank of gas.
"Yeah, I can go about every weekend," said Fenton.
Passengers are happy for the flight south, but say they hope Allegiant will add more cities.
"It would be real nice, especially if they are going to keep these prices like this," said Fenton.
Robert Uhrich, director of air service development, said that if flights continue to fill up, that could become a reality.
"This is the start of trying to get a low cost carrier we are still trying to get one to replace air tran but this is the first step," said Uhrich.
Uhrich said he'd like to see new flights as early as March, in new cities, with Savannah being a destination city for Allegiant Air's other markets.
"So some of their other cities next spring or summer we could have Allegiant flights from the north or northeast into Savannah Hilton Head market we would be a destination rather than an origination market," said Uhrich.
"If you want them to add more service to Florida or even consider us a great market, we've got to be able to show we are supporting it," said Uhrich.
And by the looks of the first flight, so far so good.
