SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - Some intense moments as firefighters fight to save an entire city block.

It happened on Montgomery Street, near 43rd Street shortly after 3 p.m.

The smoke could be seen from miles away. As firefighters worked to put out the flames, community members watched in disbelief. "I have never seen a fire burn so fast and so quick," said Ralph Woodley.

Woodley stood with onlookers, hoping and praying firefighters could stop this fire, but they faced challenges. A gas line ruptured which just fueled the flames. "I said holy smoke," said Woodley. "I said the whole block is probably going to go. It was burning so fast, even a tree caught on fire."

The fire spread from one home, to an apartment building, and threatened a third home.

Once Savannah Fire had the fire under control, Woodley felt a huge sense of relief. "I was worried about everything," said Woodley.  "It really scared us around this community."

At least three people lost their homes in the fire, but fortunately no one was hurt.

The fire is still under investigation.
