Bishop Boland Awards Gartland Service Award

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - It's one of the Diocese of Savannah's most honored awards. The Gartland Service Award, given to individuals who have given distinguished service to the church.

Sunday Bishop Kevin Boland awarded 73 south Georgians with this honor, including 23 Savannah residents.

"It's great to have a day that's so positive," said Bishop Boland. "It's so good to be able to honor people for their goodness, for their holiness, and for their service to the church community."

The recipients received their awards during Mass Sunday afternoon. The Savannah area recipients are: 

Patty and Roy Gillikin of Our Lady of Lourdes in Port Wentworth

William F. Smith and Mary Louise Harris of Saint Anne in Richmond Hill

T. Frank Baker and Peter Paolucci of Cathedral of Saint John the Baptist in Savannah

Margaret Muller and Joseph Oliveros Pinckney of Most Blessed Sacrament in Savannah

Charles Bell and William Law Jr. of Resurrection of Our Lord in Savannah

Linda Gail Ansley and Timothy Ansley of Sacred Heart in Savannah

Dr. Sandra McCord Best and Torrance Garvin Sr. of Saint Benedict the Moor in Savannah

Gaetena M. Johnston and Dempsey Q. Logue of Saint Frances Cabrini in Savannah

Josephine Lee and Tommy Long of Saint James in Savannah

Harry DuBignon Howard and James Pratt of Saint Peter the Apostle in Savannah

Yvette Carr and Carolynn Leonard of Saint Boniface in Springfield

Joan Wambold of Saint Michael on Tybee Island

    Some young girls in Savannah got the chance to be princesses for a special dance on Saturday evening. This particular dance hosted by Helping Hands of Savannah is for girls who don't get to attend the normal father-daughter dance for any reason. Servicemen in the community step in to accompany the young girls and give them the chance to be princesses for the evening.     Protestors in downtown Savannah have surrounded Georgia State Senator Michael Williams' deportation bus and are preventing the bus from moving.  At least one person has been arrested so far.     A young Statesboro child is undergoing plastic surgery to her face after a dog attacked her on Saturday afternoon.  The girl is receiving treatment to close her gaping wounds as doctors work to keep scarring at a minimum.  You can see the original Facebook post here.
