Chase leads to shots being fired by trooper

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - A man is behind bars after fleeing from a Georgia State Patrol officer in west Savannah.

Authorities say the trooper tried to pull over a car on Interstate 16 at about 12:20 a.m. Monday, but the driver took off.

The trooper followed the suspect to Gugel Street, where the car came to a stop.

That's when GSP says the suspect drove toward a trooper. They say the trooper fired three shots at the car, but did not strike the driver.

Troopers then followed the car to Baker Street, which is closed for road work.

Officers say the suspect drove through the barricade and then tried to run off on foot.  However, Savannah-Chatham Metro Police and GSP quickly took him into custody.

Charges are pending.
