CHATHAM CO., GA (WTOC) - A convicted sex offender wanted for months by the Chatham County Sheriff's Office's Sex Offender Registration and Tracking Unit is back in custody.
Chatham County Sheriff's Office deputies said Aaron Akins had been missing from his home on Heritage Street in Savannah since February, when a warrant was issued for his arrest.
Under Georgia law, a registered sex offender must notify the sheriff's office 72 hours prior to any change of address, employment or school status.
U.S. Marshals arrested Akins on Nov. 19 in Miami. He was extradited Monday morning to Chatham County.
Akins is a Level II sex offender. He was convicted of aggravated assault with intent to rape and aggravated sodomy in 1993 and has a history of violating his sex offender requirements, according to the sheriff's office.
Akins is being charged with probation violation and failure to register as a sex offender.
