Early evening fire claims a life in Effingham County

EFFINGHAM CO, GA (WTOC) - Effingham County firefighters responded to a call at about 7:30 Monday night on a structure fire near Shawnee on Ingram Road, just off Ardmore Oaky Road.

The house was fully engulfed when firefighters arrived. It took about 15 minutes to get the fire under control. Tanker trucks also brought in water from about 4 miles away.

Effingham, Springfield, and Newington firefighters were all on the scene with Effingham County sheriff's deputies.

An elderly woman with her grandchildren were trapped inside the fire. They were able to get out fine, but an elderly man was not able to make it.

The body is going to be sent to the GBI crime lab for identification, but the family says it is 71-year-old William Henry Roper.

Family members said they can't believe what happened.
