Final round of hearings set for Ga. Power rate hike

ATLANTA - The Georgia Public Service Commission will hold the third and final round of hearings at 9 a.m. on Dec. 1 in Atlanta on the Georgia Power Co. rate increase request. The hearings will continue on Thursday and Friday if needed.

The commission will also receive public comments on the Georgia Power proposal on Wednesday. After the public comments, the commission will conduct hearings on the Georgia Power's rebuttal testimony, which includes a proposal to settle the rate case.

The proposed settlement has been signed by the Georgia Power, the Commission Public Interest Advocacy Staff and the Commercial Group, according to the PSC.

Georgia Power filed a request on July 1 with the commission to increase its base rates. According to the company's original filing, it is requesting an increase in its retail rates of $1.2 billion over three years. If approved, it would mean an increase of $10.88 for the average residential customer who uses 1,000 kilowatt-hours per month. Any change in rates would take effect January 1, 2011.

An audio webcast of the hearing is available on the commission website, under the Audio Broadcast link.
