Springfield man dies in fire while trying to save others

SPINGFIELD, GA (WTOC) - The man who died in a house fire on Monday at 7:30 p.m. has been identified as 71-year-old William Roper.

The Effingham Sheriff's Office and the Effingham County Fire Department were called to Roper's house on Ingram Road. The sheriff's office reports than a woman and her four children were able to escape. They say Roper initially got out, but he went back inside with a garden hose to try and put out the fire and make sure all the children were outside the house. Roper was unable to escape the flames and his body after firefighters got the blaze under control.

Fire investigators say the fire was electrical and has been ruled an accident.
