HILTON HEAD ISLAND, SC (WTOC) - Some residents in the Lowcountry are improving their odds by learning to read.
The Literacy Volunteers of the Lowcountry are determined to help. Almost 200 turned out for the group's fund-raiser breakfast. Attendees heard from students whose lives were changed when they turned to literacy volunteers of the Lowcountry.
"We have treated each person with dignity and respect and help them accomplish what they want in life so they'll have a better future," said Nancy Williams, executive director of the Literacy Volunteers of the Lowcountry.
The need is great. There are nearly 11,000 in Beaufort County who are unable to read.
