Fifth Annual Friend of Animals Fundraiser

The struggling Liberty County Humane Shelter found a friend today. As soldiers were deployed, the shelter received more animals and fewer donations, leaving it with financial problems. But today a group called Friends of Animals of the Coastal Empire donated $3,000 to the shelter. The organization holds two fundraising events each year: the Wiener Dog Race and the Auction for Your Best Friend. Richard Carleson, vice president of the group, says all the money they raise goes straight to the animals.

"All these animal groups need support and we are there to totally give support," he said. "All the expenses are picked up by our group, so all the monies raised are 100 percent for the animals."

The Liberty County Humane Shelter will be holding a fundraiser dog wash this Saturday, July 19, from 10am to 2pm. The cost is $5 per dog to wash, and $3 per dog for a nail trim. The event will take place at Farmer's Natural Foods, 754 E. G Miles Parkway (Hwy 196) in Hinesville. They ask you bring proof of a rabies shot as well a leash and towel.

Friends of Animals will hold its annual auction on Sunday, September 7, at Savannah Station, 601 Cohen Street, from 5pm to 9pm. It's a casual-attire auction featuring items from pet grooming and boarding to gift certificates and vacation getaways, and costs $35 at the door, which includes food from local chefs and an open bar.
