Early this morning, Savannah police found Jonta Jackson slumped over dead in his Buick Century at Victory Drive and Hopkins Street. It had finally come to a halt after he ran over a concrete piling in front of a local business. A passenger in the car told police that he and Jackson were sitting in the car on Florance and Victory when three men approached them. One of them had a gun and shot through the back window, hitting Jackson at least once. He managed to drive about four blocks before ending up at the corner.
Nicole Cutter was stunned to learn it happened right outside her office.
"I was surprised, but like I said, we close at 5:30. Luckily we weren't here, but I was pretty shocked," she said.
People who live in this neighborhood say one of the problems is living right off a major street like Victory Drive.
"A lot of young guys hanging around the corner at night and a lot of other guys come from other neighborhoods," said resident Randy Paige. Paige says the neighborhood needs to be cleaned up.
"I'm really not too shocked about it because there's a lot of stuff going on in this neighborhood," he told us, adding that vigilant neighbors aren't enough. "There are a few people who are watching, but they don't see everything in the neighborhood."
Neighbor Nicole Williams agrees, saying, "We just all need to get together as one and just stop the violence. It just doesn't make any sense."
Police do not believe the shooting is connected with an earlier shooting on 40th Street. Officers say they have no motive in the shooting, and they're still looking for three suspects. If you have any information about what happened call CrimeStoppers at 234-2020.
