Coppa Claus gets ready to share Christmas spirit

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - Santa Claus's police comrade, Coppa Claus, will be spreading Christmas cheer once again, but he'll need some help.  

For 17 years, Coppa Claus has been making personal visits to sick and needy children in the Savannah and Brunswick area.

Coppa Claus, also known as Rev. Todd Rhodes, is a former lieutenant for Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police Dept. He'll will be visiting several sick children who are too ill to leave the hospital during the Christmas season.

He also distributes toys to children of low income, those who have been victimized by crime and those whose parents are deployed overseas.

He has served more than 7,500 children of needy families have been served without regard to race, religion, or income. Coppa Claus has help from 14 supporting organizations, including:

  • Youth for a cleaner environment ( YFACE)
  • 165 Georgia national Air Guard Medical group and Airmen Council
  • Response Uniforms
  • Memorial Day School
  • Overcoming by Faith Ministries
  • First African Baptist Church and Shiloh Baptist Church
  • Men's Council of the Butler Presbyterian Church
  • SSgt Radcliff USMC Toys for Tots

Coppa Claus is in need of new unwrapped toys, gift cards and clothing items to help these needy families.

    Memorial Day weekend is in full effect, which means that law enforcement is out in full force. The Department of Natural Resources is also stressing safety throughout the weekend.  Officers say that they'll be cracking down on the usual charges, such as those not wearing seatbelts, or drinking and driving.
