BEAUFORT, SC (WTOC) - Our nation's heroes laid to rest here and throughout the country will be honored in a special way this holiday season.
Members of the Disabled American Veterans put up an avenue of flags at the Beaufort National Cemetery on Wednesday in preparation for the annual Wreaths Across America ceremony this Saturday.
They'll be laying more than 1,000 green wreaths at the foot of veterans' graves as part of this national effort. Not only is it a way to honor veterans, but the local DAV took it on as a fundraising project to help veterans in the community.
"The Disabled American Veterans van, the red, white and blue one and we take Veterans to Charleston free of charge," said disabled veteran and Organizer Ron Vogeli. "The van is 10-years-old, almost 200,000 miles on it. We need to buy a new one and we're trying to raise money.
