New HHI mayor says golf tournament top priority

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, SC (WTOC) - After more than 15 years, Hilton Head Island has a new leader. Wednesday was Mayor Drew Laughlin's first day on the job.

Laughlin was sworn into office Tuesday night in town council chambers. Laughlin says securing the Heritage Golf Tournament is a top priority, along with the island's economic development.

Laughlin replaced the long-time Mayor Tom Peeples, who chose not seek re-election. Peeples said he was proud of his time served on the island.

"What I'm most proud of is all the land aquisitions, buying land and presering it," former Hilton Head Island mayor Peeples told WTOC. "That gave us the ability to build the parks we have, also buying Honey Horn Plantation, that property and making a new home for the Coastal Discovery Museum."
