SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - About 65 volunteers with the "Senior Companions" program were recognized at the First City Club. The volunteers spend time with elderly adults who need help with their day to day activites. The Awards Event is held each year by Senior Citizens, Inc.
Savannah Mayor Otis Johnson was at the event and said the recognition is well deserved.
"They work with people who would otherwise be isolated and alone. They help to prepare meals for them, to help keep doctors appointments and other things and they just provide companionship for them," said Mayor Otis Johnson.
Those who gave at least 100 hours of their time received the President's Volunteer Service Award and a letter from President Barack Obama.
