Boy pulled from fire doing better

STATESBORO, GA (WTOC) - The boy that was hospitalized when he was burned severely during a house fire in Statesboro has been upgraded from critical to serious condition.

Firefighters pulled 12-year-old Malik Smith from a burning home on Lydia Lane. A father and his two sons were asleep when the fire started.

The father was able to get his youngest son to safety, but firefighters Chris Whitehead and Steven Morris had to go into the burning home for Malik. They found him in his father's bedroom and pulled him out.

He was taken to the Augusta Burn Centers for treatment.
