Chatham County police have a Savannah man in custody, accused of beating a man so severely that the victim is now on life support. Officers were called to the Savannah Motor Lodge on Ogeechee Road about 2am, Sunday morning, where they found a man in room 34. He was unconscious. The victim is identified as 32-year-old Steven Shumate of Savannah.
Investigators say some time Saturday night, 41-year-old Reginald Sadatt Thompson knocked on the door of the room Shumate was staying in. When Shumate answered the door, witnesses tell us, Thompson beat Shumate with a table leg and repeatedly shouted, "I want my money." Hours later, Shumate's roommate called police and the victim was rushed to Memorial Health, where he is listed in critical condition.
Thompson was arrested about 4pm Sunday and taken to the Chatham County jail. He is charged with aggravated assault and attempted murder. Police say the fight was probably drug related.
