Hargray Launches "Caring Coins" Program

People living in the Low Country are getting a chance to donate to charity and barely even notice it. Starting in August, Hargray customers will have to option of rounding up the last dollar on their phone bills as part of the Caring Coins program.

For example, if your bill is $36.50, you'd round up an extra 50 cents and an independent board would figure out how to distribute that money.

"We always want to remember that this isn't just Hilton Head and Bluffton, but this reaches out to Daufuskie and Hardeeville and all the communities in between that Hargray serves," noted Caring Coins chair Paula Bethea.

Hargray officials are hoping to raise up to $300,000 a year with the new program. If everything goes to plan, they'll have close to 80 percent of their customers enrolled in it. The Community Foundation of the Lowcountry will be responsible for doling out the awards four times a year.
