DNR extends Georgia's shrimp harvest season

BRUNSWICK, GA (WTOC) - The Georgia Department of Natural Resources announced Tuesday that Georgia's food shrimp harvest season will be extended to Jan. 10, 2011.

The extension means that trawlers can continue to harvest shrimp in the Atlantic Ocean eastward of the sound-beach boundary. Those who use a cast net or a beach seine may also continue to harvest food shrimp during this time period, according to the DNR.

The DNR's Patrick Geer, chief of Marine Fisheries, said in a statement that December scientific surveys indicated shrimp is at or above normal levels compared to long-term averages, and the size of shrimp are variable but overall of marketable grades.
