Deadline nears for leadership academy

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) – Step Up Savannah is looking for participants for its upcoming Neighborhood Leadership Academy.

The program is open to men and women who are 21 years and older and live in the Savannah/Chatham County. This free 12-session course is designed to develop participants' knowledge of our community, and sharpen personal leadership skills and abilities, according to Step Up Savannah.

Participants will attend evening sessions once a week that are taught by other community leaders and experts. Participants also will be expected to design and carry out a neighborhood or community-oriented project during the course.

A small stipend will be offered to those who attend all sessions. Applications are due on Dec. 30. Classes start the last week of January at the St. Mary's Community Center.

Applications are available on the Step Up website at www.stepupsavannah.org or by calling 912.232.6747. Completed applications may be mailed to the Step Up office at 428 Bull St., Suite 208; Savannah, Ga. 31401.

    A Savannah woman is giving back to the homeless community and making them look good in the process. Besty Rothman hosted her third annual event helping at the old Savannah city mission on Bull Street today. She and a team of volunteers gave free haircuts, manicures, warm meals, and much more to people who stopped by.  Rothman, a licensed cosmetologist, said she organized the event to honor her late sister and to give back to the community.
