BLUFFTON, SC (WTOC) - Bluffton firefighters are helping brothers in arms.

Bluffton fire district's cooking team said they raised more than $12,000 during the annual Boston butts sale last weekend. Sales benefit two of their fireifighters David Rice and Lt. Matthew McDowell.

Both firefighters have been struggling with illnesses in their families. They said these funds will make a big difference.

"It's going to be a big help, get kind of caught back up," David Rice said.

"I feel like we can finally take a big deep breath and know everything is going to be OK, so it's a good feeling," said Jennifer Rice.

Both families say they appreciate all of the support from the fire department, local businesses and the community.

During last Friday's fund-raiser, firefighters sold more than 300 Boston butts and hundreds of meals.

The department has been doing this fund-raiser for several years, but this is the first time they've done it for two of their own.
