SPRINGFIELD, GA (WTOC) - Roadways in Effingham County could soon be safer thanks to a new traffic unit at the Effingham Sheriff's Office.
Sheriff Jimmy McDuffie showed county commissioners some of the new cars and equipment the unit will use. He has spent months urging the county to dedicate deputies and resources to slowing down traffic on the highway and backroads.
He says the county has suffered too many deadly crashed that trace back to speeding or drunk driving.
"They also work road checks, get out with the Georgia State Patrol in doing road checks and concentrating on patrols in areas we're having a lot of accidents and crashes," explained Sheriff McDuffie.
Sheriff McDuffie has vowed Effingham County will not become a speed trap but that the traffic unit will pay for itself in the long run.
