ATLANTA, GA (WTOC) - A routine traffic stop turned deadly when a man shot a Georgia State Trooper and then took off in his cruiser Monday.
The suspect has been identified and is custody.
It all happened when the suspect crashed and Trooper Chadwick Lecroy responded.
When Lecroy got there, the two started fighting and things turned deadly.
"Shots were fired. Our trooper was struck multiple times and is deceased because of those wounds," said Georgia State Trooper Mark McDonough.
Lecroy was apparently shot in the face twice.
The suspect hopped into his squad car, ditching it several blocks away.
Police also found what they think is the murder weapon on the roof of a nearby apartment complex.
The Georgia State Patrol said Lecroy is the first trooper to be killed by gunfire in 35 years.
He leaves behind a wife and two sons.
