CCHD issues advisory for Polk Street beach

TYBEE ISLAND, GA (WTOC) - The Chatham County Health Department has issued an advisory for the Polk Street Beach, which is the northen most part of Tybee Island at the mouth of the Savannah River.

Water tests show a higher level of enterocci bacteria, which increases the risks of gastrointestinal illness in swimmers. The CCHD recommends not swimming or wading in the water and that any fish caught should be thoroughly cleaned before cooking and eating.

The health department will restest the area and lift the advisory when bacteria levels fall below the Environmental Protection Agency's recommended standard.
