Gingerbread village demolition helps food bank

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - Now that the holidays are coming to end, crews at the Hyatt were hard at work bringing down 600 gingerbread bricks and 500 pounds of confectioner's sugar.

During the demolition, the Hyatt teamed up with America's Second Harvest to raise awareness about hunger and also collect some much needed donations.

"We collected, I would imagine, about 1,500 cans of food that we're going to donate to the Second Harvest in the next couple of days," said Hyatt Executive Chef David Gordon. "We had a bin out front and we overfilled that bin, three times that we emptied it and you know it's just a great cause and we were just happy to give something back to the community."

This was the third year the gingerbread village has been on display. Next year, Chef Gordon says the design will be even better and may have a little pirate inspiration.
