Stay-at-Home Dad's Wife Is in Iraq

When we think of military spouses raising the kids while their soldiers are fighting overseas, we usually think of women. But today, WTOC spoke with Dwayne Dawson, a stay-at-home dad who has been taking care of the home front since his wife left in January. He says although stay-at-home dads are not really recognized, there are more of them than we think

Dawson has been a single dad for the last eight months, raising four-year-old Ezeekio and one-year-old Isaiah. "You have to have a good schedule and you lose a lot of sleep because you do everything yourself," he said.

Dawson's wife, Sgt. Bronwin Dawson, left for Iraq in January, when little Isaiah was just eight weeks old. He might not remember Mommy much, but the older brother Ekeezio does.

"I didn't know how to explain to him why his mother has been gone such a long time, and when she will return," Dawson said.

And that's not the only thing Dawson is struggling with.

"I hate cooking with a passion," he admitted. "But I had to learn so my kids can have good, healthy meals."

Besides becoming a cook, and a playmate for his sons, Dawson is also a full-time college student who had to quit his job when his wife left.

"It was difficult to have my job, kids and school. So I stopped working so I can concentrate on school and kids," he said.

Dawson says he has accomplished a lot more than he ever thought he could, and he adds the next mission is for the Dawson boys to welcome home their mommy.
