EFFINGHAM, GA (WTOC) - The next phase for the Effingham Hospital expansion kicked off Sunday morning.
A groundbreaking ceremony took place for the long awaited modernization project which will add an emergency room, two operating rooms, and all of the support facilites needed.
There had been conflict over whether to expand the 40 year old facility or scrap it altogether, but board members say the additions are well worth the investment.
"While it serves the community well, the community has grown so much over the last few years that we need to expand our capabilities and our ability to perform operations and basically provide other services to the county," says Richard Rafter, chairman of hospital authority.
The new hospital space is expected to open in March of next year.
