SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - WTOC has learned late Wednesday night, after a Board of Directors meeting, Memorial Health Center has fired CEO, Dr. Phillip Schaengold.

Sources tell WTOC Schaengold was escorted out by security. While Memorial officials have not officially confirmed the change, WTOC obtained this e-mail, which went out to Memorial Health employees Wednesday night:

Tonight, the Memorial Health board of directors voted to part ways with president and CEO Phillip Schaengold.  This was a difficult decision, but we feel that we need to move the organization in a different direction.  Unfortunately, our losses have continued to grow, and we have not been able to reverse that trend.  Under his leadership, Memorial has enjoyed many successes, and we sincerely thank Phil for his service.

The board has asked Maggie Gill, senior vice president and chief operating officer, to serve as interim CEO.  Maggie has solid operational and financial experience at Memorial, and we are confident in her ability to lead the organization during this transition.  We expect to begin a search for a new CEO soon.

Memorial will continue to face significant challenges as we strive to meet our community's need in light of healthcare reform and increasing indigent and charity care costs.  But, we remain committed to providing high quality healthcare for all of our community.

On behalf of your board of directors, thank you for your dedication and commitment to Memorial Health, our patients, and their families.

William T. Daniel, Jr.
Chair, Memorial Health Board of Directors
