Bulloch County Red Cross Needs Funds

Quincy Wooden is still trying to clean up after a tornado nearly destroyed his home. Aside from his congregation, the Red Cross was his family's biggest help.

"They've been tremendous in helping my family, supporting us initially as far as getting a place to stay," he said.

Now the group that helps people in disasters faces one of its own. Between a devastating tornado and an apartment fire this month, the Bulloch County chapter is nearly broke.

"So far in July we've spent about $12,000 helping those disaster victims," said Kathleen Kosmoski of the Red Cross.

That's half the year's budget in the first month of the financial calendar. You could say the chapter is between a rock and a hard place. They're thousands of dollars over budget, but not so far over they qualify for help from the national chapter. What makes it even worse is they haven't even seen their worst season of the year yet.

Kosmoski expects ten to 12 local families will be left homeless this winter from heater fires. She says local donations help victims through local merchant vouchers.

"The money stays here in the local community, 100 percent stays here so it keeps recycling," she said.

She says biggest fear is that someone will face a disaster Red Cross won't be able to meet.
