SWAINSBORO, GA (WTOC) - The Southeast Georgia Chapters of the American Red Cross opened a shelter at the Swainsboro Middle School at the request of the Emanuel County Emergency Management because of winter weather conditions. The shelter will be open for remainder of Tuesday as long as necessary due to weather condiditons.
The Southeast Georgia Chapters of the American Red Cross also responded to three overnight fires.
One person is without a home in Swainsboro after they lost their home on Church Street to a fire on Monday, Jan. 10. The Red Cross provided food, clothing and necessities.
In Sylvania, a fire destroyed a home on Airport Road around 2:40 a.m. on Tuesday. Two adults and one child lost their home. The American Red Cross responded and is continuing to help the family.
Another fire in Swainsboro resulted in one person being displaced. Around 6:30 a.m., a fire destroyed a home on Azalea trail. The American Red Cross provided lodging and immediate financial assistance.
The three brings the total number of incidents in the area to 20. The Southeast Georgia Chapters of the American Red Cross has assisted 29 families in its 31 county jurisdiction so far this year.
