SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - The SCAD Museum of Art is presenting "The Art of Faith Ringgold: Story Quilts and Freedom Quests" from Jan. 31 through April 15. The museum is located at 227 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. and will the exhibition will open with a lecture by Ringgold at 7 p.m. on Jan. 31. The lecture and exhibition is free and open to the public. The museum is open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. and on Sunday from 1 p.m. until 5 p.m.
The exhibition features 60 pieces of art from four decades. Ringgold will present some of her most recent work from her New York gallery that will be on display for the first time. The display includes many different works of art, such as masks, dolls, soft sculptures, painted story quilts, drawings, prints and illustrations.
Ringgold is a distinguished African American painter, mixed media sculptor, performance artist and illustrator. Her works have been featured at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the Museum of Modern Art, the Guggenheim Museim and several others. Ringgold recently celebrated her 80th birthday and has received numerous awards, including 22 honorary doctorates.
The exhibition is sponsored by the SCAD Museum of Art, Trustees Lecture Series, Walter O. Evans Center for African American Studies and the Savannah Black Heritage Festival. The Gwendolyn Lawrence Foundation is also supporting the event.
