Coin meters return to Beaufort's Bay Street

BEAUFORT, SC (WTOC) -  The Beaufort City Council on Tuesday approved bringing back coin-operated parking meters to Bay Street.

Now 24 coin-only parking meters for double spaces and seven meters for single spaces will be installed this week on Beaufort's Bay Street.

The electronic kiosks are moving to main parking lots in the downtown marina, the library and the Waterfront Park playground, said Beaufort City Manager Scott Dadson in a statement.

This is the latest change in parking fee after last week's rate changes were rolled out.

Bay Street, from Carteret to Newcastle at the downtown marina, now has three-hour parking at a $1 per hour.

Farther from Bay Street the cost of parking goes down. It's now 75 cents per hour to park on Port Republic, Charles, West, Scott and Carteret streets and  50 cents per hour to park at meters on Craven Street.

Time limits have changed for locations beyond Bay Street.

It's 75 cents per hour for the four-hour parking spaces at Port Republic, Charles, West, Scott and Carteret streets.

There's no limit on parking for metered spaces on Craven Street between Scott and Newcastle streets. They remain at 50 cents per hour.

There's no time limit on parking at the marina lot, which costs $1 per hour.

There's a two hour limits per space for parking lots at the downtown library and the waterfront playground. Those lots cost $1 per hour.

Parking tickets remain at $10 if paid within a week.
