SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - A Southwest Middle School student received high honors for his work in the community. Leon Maxwell an eighth grader at Southwest Middle School will receive one thousand dollars from the Ringling Brother and Barnum and Bailey Circus to fund community service endeavors.

Leon has autism but doesn't let that stopping him from going out and volunteering in the community. His teacher Helen Sanders nominated him for the award and says she couldn't think of someone who deserves it more.

"I'm extremely proud usually our kids who are out in the community don't get a lot of acknowledgement so this is a real pat on the back for all the hard work he's done all year," said Maxwell.

Leon volunteers at Savannah Christian Church food and clothing bank, Bamboo Gardens and various nursing homes.

He will receive his big award either Thursday or Friday during the show.
