Build Brigade kicks off work on home for wounded soldier

HINESVILLE, GA (WTOC) - The building of a specially adapted home for a wounded soldier by Homes for Our Troops is under way.

The three-day Build Brigade is scheduled from Jan. 21 to 23 for Staff Sgt. Jason Letterman in Hinesville. He suffered bones, liver lacerations and traumatic brain injuries and was left a double amputee after an IED blast in Farasiyah, Iraq in May 2008.

The weekend building effort kicked off with a ceremony at 8:30 a.m. Friday. Volunteers are raising the home's first wall after the ceremony. They're scheduled to finish the framing, erect the home's four sides and install trusses by early Friday afternoon.

The building will continue from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

The 2,600-square-foot, single-level specially adapted home will include large door openings and wide hallways, hard surfaced floors, roll-under work areas in the kitchen, a master bath with large roll-in shower, according to a news release.

Each day of the Build Brigade, 75 to 100 volunteers are expected to be on-site to help. Interior and finishing work will be completed over the next few months.
