AASU to show award-winning documentaries

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - Armstrong Atlantic State University will host two free documentary screenings as part of the university's 2011 Common Read Film Series.

The events are free and open to the public.

Trouble on the Water will be shown at 1 p.m. on Jan. 28 at the Student Union Ogeechee Theater. The film won the Grand Jury Prize at the 2008 Sundance Film Festival. It shows of perspective of Hurricane Katrina never before seen on screen. It includes home video shot by aspiring rap artist Kimberly Rivers Roberts.

A Small Act will be shown at 2 p.m. on Feb. 14. at the Student Union Ogeechee Theater. The film was a winner of several film festival awards, including the Audience Award and Director's Award at the 2010 Nantucket Film Festival. It profiles Chris Mburu, a child in a poor Kenyan village who is sponsored by a woman in Sweden, Hilde Back. Mburu ends up graduating from Harvard and working with the United Nations investigating human rights abuses.

Since these storms aren't moving fast, you can expect water to collect on roadways if you're caught under a downpour. The good news is that we will be much drier by sunset, meaning your dinner grilling plans are still a go!
