GARDEN CITY, GA (WTOC) - Emergency crews were in Garden City on Saturday to contain an oil leak. The Coast Guard confirms to WTOC that employees at the Nustar Energy Refinery off Foundation Drive in Garden City noticed the spill around 3 p.m.
Crude oil was leaking from a three to five inch split in one of the company's tanks. The Coast Guard says between 500 and 1,000 gallons of oil spilled onto the ground.
"The refinery has initiated transfer of the remaining product of that tank to another tank and is working with our skilled response teams to ensure containment and clean up of the product," said Wren Mills the VP and General Manager of Nustar.
Nustar says state officials have been notified of the spill and they will investigate the incident. Fortunately, none of the oil reached the Savannah River.
