Fatal Fire in Savannah

A blaze broke out about 9pm last night in a house on Harmon Bluff Drive on Savannah's south side. When firefighters arrived on the scene, they found flames and smoke coming from the left rear corner room of the house.

Residents in the area tell investigators the resident had come out, but went back inside the burning house to save her pet poodle. Firefighters fought the flames and searched for the woman. They finally found her near her bedroom, on the other side of the house away from the fire. She apparently died from smoke inhalation. A short time later, her dog was found in another bedroom, also dead.

Preliminary results show the fire started accidentally, but fire investigators and police are continuing their investigation.
