SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - Feb. 1 kicks off Black History Month and Leopold's Ice Cream is offering a sweet treat for two creative writers.
Leopold's has teamed up with the Live Oak Library and is asking children to write on the topic: If you were mayor for a day and could chose one influential African American in history to celebrate, who would it be and why?
"The intent is to, yes get kids to learn something, but to get them involved too. Look at their surroundings. The essay can be about any individual they choose. It can be about a parent a teacher, a historic figure," Leopold Straton told WTOC.
The Black History Month essay contest is open to all children in first grade through 6th grade. The essay should be 1000 words or less.
The deadline is Feb. 18. Two winners will be chosen for ice cream parties.
Entries can be dropped off at any Live Oak Library or at Leopold's Ice Cream. You must include your name, school, grade and email address. Download a copy of the flier.
