SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) – The Savannah National Wildlife Refuge parking area located directly across SC Highway 170 from the exit to the Laurel Hill Wildlife Drive is temporarily closed starting Wednesday. The closure also includes part of the Tupelo Trail that runs north from the parking area.
Construction crews working on the refuge's Freshwater Diversion Canal access to this area as they begin to transition their work to the north side of SC Highway 170, according to a news release.
People are being asked to use the parking area located approximately half-mile west of the closed parking area.
The trails have been closed since Dec. 1, 2010, in order to avoid disturbing wintering waterfowl, and will be re-opened to provide visitors additional wildlife viewing opportunities, according to a news release.
